Leaders Be Memorable It Is Possible

Be a memorable character.

Someone I recently met at a conference emailed me and shared “Wow, You are a memorable character!

I shared the comment on a Facebook group that gives Women’s Leadership Advice. I received responses from women saying “Go Girl” “You Rock” and so on. I also received a response saying

“That is rude, why would someone write that?” I realized that many lurkers probably thought the same thing, Which leads me to write this post, “Are You Memorable?” and more importantly “Are You a Memorable Character?” It’s not rude to be called a memorable character, it’s awesome and powerful!

Some of the best leadership advice I ever received was from one of my sponsors and a CSMO (Chief Sales and Marketing Officer) named Al Roth. He said, “People remember you, promote you, sponsor you, hire you, buy from you and refer you because they remember you are a positive character.

In researching this post concept I came across the concepts of how writers create memorable characters. Those beloved characters in books we reach, movies we watch and stories we heard. How do writers see memorable characters?

In the blog “The Write Practice” Joe Bunting shared lessons on developing the strongest form of characterization:

“Orson Scott Card says, “People become, in our minds, what we see them do. This is the strongest, most irresistible form of characterization.”

What do your characters do, then? Not where they grew up or what color their eyes are or what they say their favorite food is. What do they do?

You create and become a memorable character by what you do on a daily basis. The way you interact with people, how you present yourself walking in a room. You get to create the memories people have of you. It is your responsibility. Think of some powerful memorable characters: Maya Angelou (rest in peace), Madeleine Albright, Oprah, your Aunt (that Aunt who everyone loved), and some of your female role models.

In the world of business (your own or where you work) it is up to you to be a memorable character by your actions.

So where are your opportunities to create and be memorable as a  leader and powerhouse?

1- Leaders Be Memorable In Meetings.

Share your ideas. State them clearly, without explanation or seeking permission. Own your ideas and share them wPegine Leadership Motivational Business Keynote Speaker www.Pegine.com 904.280.8806ith strength. How? Have direct eye contact with senior leaders first, then with those around the table. Think of bullet points. State a bullet point and then look at the next person. State the bullet point and move on. Project your voice and keep it low (the difference between a screeching cheerleader and a smooth jazz DJ — be the DJ).

Raise your hand and ask a question. Be aware of the room. If only men asked a question, and you are a woman,  then absolutely RAISE YOUR HAND and ask a question. Maybe you don’t have a question in mind. Be prepared and always ask about future implications. “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” “How will this action impact us in 5 months/years” Rarely do people ask speakers, or leaders these questions… Be the one that asks.

2- Leaders Be Memorable While Networking

Walk the room and greet everyone. I teach an amazing technique during my networking programs about how to really maneuver the event as a powerful leader. The program is a favorite among ERG’s (Employer Resource Groups) and sales conferences. (Call my office at (904) 280-8806 to bring me to your event.) When I say walk the room I mean own the room. Act like you are the host (even if you aren’t) greet people as though you are welcoming them to your home. No one does this EVER at any event! This is how you get recognized. The higher up you are, the more important this skill is, DON’T take this action lightly. People are watching you and evaluating you. Own your power, be the host.

Honor the Business Card Take a person’s card and take time the to read it. Repeat the persons name. Act like the card is important to you. Take your card and honor it the same way. This is a reflection of you. Hold it like it is gold, give it to the person as if it is precious (it is).

3- Leaders Be Memorable Interacting with Your Teams, Coworkers, Friends and Family

Smile and Be Relaxed

The greatest gift you can give someone is your smile and relaxed demeanor. You know how awesome you are. You don’t have to be stiff and tight. Smile, be relaxed and welcoming. It shows confidence and reflects that you own the messages “Yes, I did that and that. Yes, I’m influential. Yes, I have leverage”. To gain confidence and get to this ease of engagement you have to:

Daily review and acknowledge what you have accomplished

Create a dossier of your accomplishments and awards (to remind yourself what you have done). Also, have a future plan for yourself. Know what you want in five years, ten years and how you will FEEL when you accomplish those goals.

Get Rid of the FEAR

I greet and meet people all the time who look so scared and fearful. The fears run the gamut from “What will she think of me?” “I need this job. I can’t take the risk” to “I’m a fake and they will find out” You have to take responsibility for your life. The fears you think you cover up so well … show up. It doesn’t matter how much you make or what you have accomplished… if you have any fear thoughts others can sense it. So you must take action NOW! I coach leaders. All kinds of leaders. Including lots of women in business, in politics and those who are seeking corporate board positions. Here is what I have learned. Every level you seek will trigger the fear factor, it is normal. Developing the skills, habits, and processes to overcome the fears and create courage is your responsibility. Teaching leaders to be fearless is one of those most fabulous parts of my job.

Leaders  Being a Memorable Character Requires Action

Not only am I memorable character. I built my brand around it. I struggled for years to ‘find me’. The truth was that I knew me…everyone else wanted me to conform to their image of who they wanted me to be, the character they wanted to mold me into. It didn’t work for me. It won’t work for you. I chose to create my own memorable character. Strong, powerful, passionate, fearless, fun, focused, creative, influential, dramatic, and engaging. People love me, people hate me… as long as I know I love me I’m okay. I serve with love and passion. Here is my women’s leadership advice: “Believe in your uniqueness. Your power, your potential, and your incredible gifts which serve our world exist in your uniqueness. Confidently share your magnificence because is a true gift to the world. Be a memorable character.”
