It's Not Fair

“It’s not fair!” Shouts my 14-year-old because he has to do his chores. As he rants about his chores I’m thinking about my mom. Several weeks ago she surprised us all by being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Three times over the last few weeks I have found myself shouting the same sentence “It’s not fair”. Then the infamous words that bring me back to reality tingle in my ears and heart, “get over it”.

Yes, life can be perceived as being unfair. Sometimes we get wonderful rewards and blessings that amaze us. Other times, like lately for me about my mom, it can feel like we can’t go one more step. When there are miracles in our lives and we wonder why us, why now and when there is devastation we ask why us, why now.

Life is a series of roller coaster highs and dramatic falls. How we deal with these highs and lows can impact our perception of the world and ourselves. Here are my top ten tips for keeping centered and sane duringthe lows (and the highs).

  1. Go within. Put your hand on your heart. Feel the steady beat, breath in and ponder on the magnificence of your machine.
  2. Read affirmations that tell you how great, special and supportive you are.
  3. Give yourself a pedicure or manicure or treat yourself to one.
  4. Go take a walk. While you are walking concentrate on how your legs feel, concentrate on deep breathing.
  5. Notice how many living creature and animals are around you. Concentrate on their life. How they move, look and survive
  6. Tell people around you how important they are to you.
  7. Make sure you are eating well. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables during stressful times.
are not the time to eat junk food.
  8. Sing a silly song over and over.
  9. When you snap and get angry (which is okay when you are stressed) apologize to your victim. Let them know that you were stressed and took it out on them.
  10. Put great music on, then dance, tap your fingers and smile.Remembering that without the bad times we can’t appreciate the good times.
Life is fair. Sometimes it’s great; sometimes it’s so-so; sometimes things are good and other times not so good. However, how we look at our life can determine whether we perceive that life has been good to us, fair to us or unfair. Appreciating the little things, the moments.

The applause we get from a co-workers, the smell of a just washed head of hair, the feeling of triumph when we get passed a fear and succeeded help us appreciate life. Holding on to, AND creating opportunities to have awesome emotions is how we can help ourselves see life in it’s best light. Enjoy life, smiling and saying “bring it on I’m ready!” is the best way to make life better than fair.
