Pegine’s Thought of the Month:

“Thinking is the first step towards receiving what you want. Asking is the key to getting what you want.”

~Pegine Echevarria, MSW~
.....
Quotes of the Month:

“It takes courage to ask for what you want. Courage is not the absence of fear. It's doing what it takes despite one's fear.”
~Mark Victor Hanson and Jack Canfield~
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek; and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [Matthew 7:7-8]
~ Bible ~
.....
Try-its:
Here is the key to asking for what you want. Whether it is from your team, from one of your employees, or from your family.
1. Start out assuming that you will get what you want.
Too often, you start out asking for something with a clear intention that you aren’t going to get it. “I know you don’t want to but can you …?” or, “will you …? Of course you won’t, what was I thinking?” You jump in before they even answer.
2. Be clear in your communication. What exactly do you want? Where do you want it? How do you want it? and By when do you want it?
If you give vague instructions, you will get vague responses. You must be clear about your answers to the above questions before you ask them, otherwise you will not get the results you want.
If you are a yeller, and I know there are a few yellers reading this, understand that when you ask for something (especially your kids), by yelling they will eventually tune you out and ignore you. You are yelling to be heard and to be paid attention to but your actions have numbed the recipients and are no longer effective. So stop yelling, it serves no purpose.
3. Check on the progress of people. If they said they were going to do something for you, follow up, to ensure that it is being done, answer any questions, and make sure that your request and their actions are heading in the direction that you wanted them to go.
With teams, it is critical that you check in with them regularly. It is easy to go off on tangents and get bogged down in minutia. It is important for you, the giver of the tasks, to intercede, clarify and offer direction; so that you get the results you want. Too often leaders give information then never follow up. Never making sure that the team or department is going down the right road. This leaves the team feeling uneasy, unnerved and confused. Then when the team doesn’t get the results that you, the leader, wanted you have only you, the leader, to blame because you didn’t follow up with the team.

Kick-butt actions:

One of the best ways to focus your asking is to make yourself a chart with four columns

Column 1) Who did you ask
Column 2) What did you ask
Column 3) When will you follow up
Column 4) What is the completion date

This is a simple, but very powerful tool. It is also a reminder for you to check in to insure that what you need and want will be provided. You can use it for your own life, to keep track of the things you asked yourself to do.

This chart focuses on:

Who is the best person to ask? Why?
What are you asking for specifically? Remember the Try It, make sure that you are specific.
When will you follow up? Your responsibility does not stop because you assigned someone else the task. You responsibility now is to ensure that your team has everything they need (including clarity) to get the job done.
What is the completion date? If they need more time you will know that when you follow up. Everyone is now clear about when the job will be finished.

Maintaining the process is critical for your success and the success of the team.

News from Pegine:

A soon to be released white paper on employee engagement and productivity offered suggestions for leaders, managers and employers who want to increase employee engagement and productivity. Florida based Team Pegine, a consulting and training company, surveyed over 200 employees, from the Jacksonville, Florida area on how managers and leaders can create a more effective work environment. The suggestions for managers and leaders were:

1. Treat everyone equally
2. Be fair
3. Incorporate teambuilding activities in the workplace
4. Get to know each of your employees
5. Ask for input from all levels
6. Be consistent
Research in employee engagement has proved that productivity increases when employees are engaged. Employee engagement is the degree of employees' emotional and intellectual involvement in their employer. It is more than satisfaction or commitment, but how much the employee wants to and actually does contribute to corporate results. Several research studies, both qualitative and quantitative, found that employees who are engaged in creating business results speak positively about their employer to co-workers, potential employees and customers, have a real desire to be part of the organization and go "above and beyond" in their efforts to accomplish tasks that will contribute to business success.
Pegine Echevarria, founder of Team Pegine, shared, “Employees want to be connected with all levels of the company. They want management to incorporate team building activities in their work week so that everyone can have a chance to communicate and interact in a more humane way. Connecting with each other, other divisions and with management was highly sought and was a prominent factor in increasing their productivity. Once they were connected they were able to align with the vision and direction of the company, increasing their engagement.”

Respondents were from five different industries, who described their workplace as pleasant places to work and whose employers rated them as highly productive. The industries surveyed were hospitality, education, human resources, finances and technology.

Team Pegine provides teambuilding, leadership development and human potential consulting. Pegine Echevarria facilitates sessions and speaks on teambuilding, leadership and success topics.
