Pegine’s Motivational Times Newsletter:

Title: Believe in Yourself and Your Team
Copyright Pegine Echevarria, MSW 2004
Date: June 04 Volume 5 Issue 6

You can achieve anything you believe.

Do you believe that?

Whatever your answer - your life is a reflection of your answer. The wonderful and hardest part, about being human is realizing that we have choice and with that choice we have power over our destiny. Often, people choose to not believe in themselves and their life. Others believe in themselves so much that they reap rewards beyond their imagination.

Have you ever noticed someone not quite as smart as you, has less personality and fewer skills than you is acknowledged, promoted and is achieving? Does it drive you nuts? Does it seem unfair?

He has success because he believes in himself. He believes that people are there to help and guide him. He believes that he is capable. He goes after his dreams and goals because he believes.

Teams are similar. Those that believe succeed. Those that don’t do not succeed. Whether the team believes in their abilities or not is dependent on the leader/manager. Does the leader/manager believe in the team?

Surrounding yourself with a team that you believe in is critical to your success and that of the team. Often leaders/managers forget to share that they believe in their team. They forget to behave as though their team is capable. They end up micro managing the team never realizing that the leader/manager is communicating to team members that “I don’t trust you”, “I don’t believe in you or your work.”

A team that has a leader who believes in them ALWAYS has a productive and cohesive team. It may take work to get team members to believe in themselves, but that is what good leaders do. A great leader/manager believes in her team’s abilities and is committed to its success. Eventually, team members begin to believe in themselves and their job, leading to high productivity and high morale. The greatest motivator is when a leader/manager believes that her team can do it and that her team will do it.

Pegine’s Thought of the Month:

“Believing in yourself and in your team begins with faith. Faith is the willingness to believe that everything that you need to succeed will come your way. Everything starts with your willingness.”
Pegine Echevarria, MSW
Quotes of the Month:

“There is but one cause of human failure. And that is man's lack of faith in his true self.”
William James, the great psychologist of the early 20th Century

“Believing that you cannot have something is the same thing as not desiring to have it, for it produces the same result.”
From Conversations with God, Book 3, by Neale Donald Walsch

“We are what and where we are because we have first imagined it.”
Donald Curtis

“Don't let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.” Richard L. Evans

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy”
Norman Vincent Peale
Try-its:
Are you willing? Are you willing to believe in yourself? Are you willing to believe in your team? You may think that you are. You may be saying yes because that is what you THINK you should be saying. Now it is time to write down what you really are feeling, thinking and what you really believe. It is only by being honest with your self that you can begin to be willing to believe in yourself and others.

1. Choose what you want to work on, believing in yourself or your team.
If want to work on believing in yourself, then choose this question. Are you willing to believe in yourself?
If want to work on believing in your team then choose this question.
Are you willing to believe in your team?
2. Fold you paper in half.
3. Write the question and IMMEDIATELY write the first thought that pops in your head. It doesn’t matter what it is just write it down. Do not evaluate it.
4. Repeat this five times
5. Now write the following statements (continue to work on either yourself or your team)
I believe in myself or I believe in my team
6. IMMEDIATELY write the first thing that pops into your head. It doesn’t matter what it is just write it down.
7. Do this four times
8. Review what you wrote. Your answers will be your gauge regarding what perceptions, beliefs need to be changed. This will be your guide to focus on and change on self defeating messages both as a person and as a team leader/manager.

This is important work. You can not communicate that you believe in yourself or your team if you have negative language floating in your head.

Kick-butt actions:

When you want to increase your ability to believe in yourself follow these techniques:
1. Be aware of how you communicate to yourself. How do you take to yourself? What words do you use? What tone do you use? Would you let your neighbor or your colleagues speak to you that way? If the answer is no, take steps to change how you communicate to yourself.
2. Make a list of positive actions and accomplishments that you have taken over the last few days, the last month and the last year. Applaud your accomplishments.
3. Review your personal growth experiences. What seminars have you attended? What positive self awareness and personal development books have you read lately? Have you listened to learning CD’s? Acknowledge the steps you have taken. Remember the key to fostering a strong positive belief in your self is to acknowledge that the goal is progress not perfection. Taking action makes you a believer.

When you want to communicate your belief in your team you can apply the following techniques.

1. Notice the words you use. Really observe the language you use to describe yourself as a leader and how you discuss your team. The military has a motto “praise in public, criticize in private,” as a manager and leader it is important to acknowledge your team in public as well as to the team itself. However if a person is not meeting the team’s standards or is behaving inappropriately, take them aside and be clear about their behavior and why it is not acceptable.
2. Make sure each member of your team has an opportunity to share their ideas and points of view. By allowing them to share their insights you will grow to appreciate their ability to problem solve, be creative and seek solutions.
3. Meet with each member of the team individually. Find out how they like to be lead and communicated to. Ask questions to learn why they want to be a part of the team and what they can bring to the team. Allow each individual member to learn about you, your likes and dislikes. By being clear about expectations you can garner the support of team members and give them what they need to get the job done.
