Title: Power Partners & Morale Moochers
Copyright Pegine Echevarria, MSW 2004
Date: August 04 Volume 5 Issue 8

When you were little you were warned by educators, parents, coaches and yes, those motivational speakers that came to your school, about not hanging out with negative people. Now, as an adult, you are on your own and must commit to yourself not to be sucked into a negative web that brings you and your team down.

Life is too short to deal with negativity. A good friend of mine who owns her own business has a sign hanging in her employee’s lunchroom that says “We don’t work with jerks.” Her thoughts – “there is more than enough business available with great, positive people that we don’t need to do business with jerks.” Now that is leadership. Her motto works – she is very successful and everyone in her company is happy to be there.

Sometimes negativity sneaks up on you. You may be evaluating a product, a session, or yourself with another person. You start acknowledging the positives then turn to the negatives. Soon your negative list starts growing and growing and you both fall into the negative spiral, seeking the negative, confirming the negativity and validating the negative point of view, before long you can’t see any of the positives. This happens way too often in relationships, in business and in our homes.

There are people who only see the negative in a situation. They may sound like they are being positive, but you can sense that they are really looking for something to complain about or something to be frustrated about. Do you know anyone like that?

This month’s topic is about creating power partners and letting go of morale moochers (those that suck your energy, your life and your smile). Power partners are people and teams who seek the positive in themselves and others, they truly want to support themselves and the teams they are members of, and they know that power partners make a difference.

Morale moochers, on the other hand, love to create chaos, have you join them in their pity parties and can make a team stall. At all costs morale moochers, or their behavior, must be eliminated from your life and your teams. To do this you can use the following recipe:

1- Courage – you must have courage to be upfront, honest and willing to tell the person. Use the traffic signal technique (see try-its section).
2- Review – assess whether the person has met your requirements. During the red light discussion you set boundaries and a timeline. Did he achieve the results you wanted?
3- Eliminate – Often morale moochers choose not to change. That is their choice, just as you have the choice to eliminate them from your sphere of interaction.

Pegine’s Thought of the Month:

“Being human is hard; being a positive human is harder. Are you trying harder? ”

Quotes of the Month:

“We don’t work with jerks”

“Speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil”

Try-its:

Use the traffic light process before you evaluate anything. Just follow the green, yellow and red signal method. Think of a traffic light. Green means go (keep on doing), Yellow means caution (if you make some changes you will have positive results), Red means stop right now (this is hurting your opportunities):

a) Green: Identify a minimum of five behaviors, actions, or situations that the person or team does well.
b) Yellow: Define two things that are okay but need some adjustments to improve.
c) Red: Define one behavior, action, or situation that must change. Define what needs to occur to for the behavior, action, or situation be considered changed and by when does it need to happen.

Kick-butt actions:

1- Start your day itemizing the positives in your life and work. Do two separate lists. Keep them close by so you can review them throughout the day.
2- Be aware of your moan and groan sessions. If you are with someone who is complaining, whining, or depressing you, walk away. You don’t have to listen; someone else will listen (unless they read this article also, but that isn’t your problem).
3- If you are in a leadership position you must make it a rule that if people want to complain to you they must also bring three solutions. DO NOT BECOME A COUNSELOR. Allow your team to dream up their solutions to the problems they are encountering. They can then present them to you and you can determine which way to go. You hired them for their expertise, let them be the experts.

Creating Power Partners

1- Identify people within your organization that you consider positive, engaging and supportive. (they can be in other divisions or units)
2- Invite them to lunch.
3- Send them a weekly upbeat email; create a positive power partnership with that person.
4- Identify people within you social structure that work at developing themselves and are positive, engaging and supportive.
5- Reach out to them and invite them to lunch, call for a chat.
6- Be social. (by the way, this is one technique I struggle with. When I’m home I want to cocoon and not get out of my environment but, alas, my personal development commitment requires that I get out there and be around positive people).
